What even is that?
That head scratching moment when you receive your brief and the dress code reads Business casual. BUSINESS CASUAL….WHAT EVEN IS THAT???, I hear you screaming. I mean, it’s pretty contradictory right? Are we going for a party on the top and business on the bottom?. Jeans, Are they considered business enough?. Can you wear those cute new sandals that you just bought? Is a tracksuit but a bouji one considered business casual? It’s a head scratcher for sure. Let me break it down for you.
Business casual style is a dress code that is less formal than traditional business attire but still maintains a professional and polished appearance. It typically allows for more relaxed and comfortable clothing choices while still adhering to certain guidelines. Business casual attire may include items such as dress pants, a button-down shirt or blouse, a blazer or cardigan, and closed-toe shoes. It often excludes more formal elements like suits, ties, and high heels. However, it is important to note that the specific definition of business casual can vary depending on the company or industry, so it is always best to check with the dress code policy of a particular workplace.
Let’s delve into the Flight attendant side of it as I believe most of you readers will come from that background and if you don’t it’s easy to adapt to an office /conference type of event.
I definitely believe that a closed shoe is best, especially in the flight attendant world. We are moving around a lot and not typically sat in a classroom all day. We’re doing safety drills, cooking, floral arranging, role playing and I think that a closed toe shoe shows respect and that you mean business. Save your sandals and pretty open toed shoes for after class. Find a heel height that you can work with and wear most of the day or take a pair of flats to wear during your most active periods.
Blazers. Oh how they can change an outfit instantly. It’s an immediate glow up piece if ever there was one. Take jeans and a tee for instance, add a blazer, immediately took you from a 5/6 to a 9/10. You cant go wrong with a neutral colored blazer and it really does belong in your basics.
Jeans. I do believe they belong in a Business casual setting, just make sure there are no holes, rips or raw hemlines.
Dress pants and button downs don’t need to be the typical office black pants and a white shirt seen in every Macy’s office wear section. This is where you can play around a little, have a big old collar, puffy sleeves, a stripe, love a stripe! Cropped, but not too cropped! Then we would have to move into layering….., a wider pant leg, a cargo pant (within reason) but no leggings or jeggings please, we are not working out!
I really hope this helped, but let me know in the comments. Until next time x
